2024 Updated Rules
NCEA Level 1 = 60 subject credits at Level 1 or above + 20-credit co-requisite (Literacy & Numeracy — separate, met once only)
The old 80-credit rule no longer applies. 5 subjects × 20 credits = 100 available — aim for 50+ M/E for endorsement.
20
Co-req credits
Literacy & Numeracy Co-requisite — Required Separately
These 20 credits sit outside your 60 subject credits. Graded Pass / Not Achieved only (no M/E). Met once — counts for all NCEA levels.
Assessed via online Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) or approved standards (transition 2024–2027).

2024 Updated Rules
NCEA Level 2 = 60 subject credits at Level 2 or above + 20-credit co-requisite (if not already met at Level 1)
The old 80-credit / carry-over 20 rule no longer applies. 50+ M/E credits earns Merit endorsement.
If met in Yr 11
Literacy & Numeracy Co-requisite
If you met the co-requisite in Year 11, you never need to repeat it. It counts permanently across all NCEA levels. If not yet met — complete it alongside your Level 2 subjects via CAAs or approved standards.
Highlight Pathway:
Engineering Path — Year 12: Maths Calculus (91261 algebra + 91262 calculus are essential) Physics (91168 waves + 91170 mechanics + 91173 electromagnetism) Chemistry Digital Technologies — Without Level 2 Calculus and Physics you cannot enrol in most BE programmes.
Medical Path — Year 12: Biology (91156 cellular processes + 91157 genetics are critical) Chemistry (91164 bonding + 91166 reactivity) Maths Statistics English — Most NZ medical schools require Biology and Chemistry at Level 3 — build the foundation now.

2024 Updated Rules + University Entrance
NCEA Level 3 = 60 subject credits at Level 3 or above + 20-credit co-requisite (if not already met)
University Entrance additionally requires: NCEA Level 3 + 3 approved subjects × 14+ credits each + UE Literacy (10 cr) + UE Numeracy (10 cr)
Met once only
Co-requisite & UE Literacy/Numeracy — Different Things
The co-requisite (US32403/32405/32406) is met once and covers all NCEA levels. UE Literacy & Numeracy is a separate requirement — 10 literacy + 10 numeracy credits from an approved list of achievement standards (different from the co-req unit standards).
Highlight Pathway:
Engineering Path — Year 13 (Critical Year): Calculus (91577 differentiation + 91578 + 91579 integration — required for most BE programmes) Physics (91523 waves + 91524 mechanics + 91526 electrical systems) Chemistry Digital Technologies Statistics — Without Level 3 Calculus and Physics as UE approved subjects, most engineering programmes will decline your application.
Medical Path — Year 13 (Critical Year): Biology (91602/91603/91604 — responses, homeostasis — core med prerequisites) Chemistry (91391 organic compounds + 91392 equilibrium) Calculus or Statistics Physics — Most NZ medical schools (Auckland, Otago) require Biology and Chemistry as UE approved subjects. Aim for Excellence.
